Josep Maria Carbo

,

Carbó was born in 1972 in the coastal town of Premià de Mar, Barcelona, largely because that is where his parents happened to be at the time. He is a self-taught artist, which essentially means he figured out how to artfully arrange colored water and graphite on squashed wood pulp without anyone officially issuing him a certificate to do so.

Growing up, Carbó inhabited a house containing eight cousins and an astonishing three grandmothers. This is widely considered by domestic experts to be a dangerous concentration of both juvenile kinetic energy and absolute, knitwear-clad authority. Realizing that the roaming pack of children was mere moments away from dismantling the house down to its foundational molecules, the grandmothers instituted a desperate survival tactic. They forced the entire horde to sit down and paint.

What was initially deployed as a frantic emergency crowd-control measure inadvertently backfired into a lifelong obsession. Having survived the grandmother-enforced watercolor hostage situation, Carbó spent the remainder of his youth compulsively doodling on notebooks, schoolbooks, and frankly any flat surface that couldn’t run away fast enough.
