So, imagine an anime where twenty-something girls discover friendship and themselves through new flavors of alcohol. Oh, wait, there is one.
It is called Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk, a title sounding less like a television program and more like a highly specific condition acquired after a questionable pub visit. Adapted from the manga by “Hey,” this delightfully intoxicated series from Studio Soigne is directed by Takashi Sakuma.
The plot centers on Botan, a university student who has avoided booze for twenty years because carbonated drinks make her burp—a perfectly reasonable stance against aggressive bubbles. She befriends her dorm supervisor, Ibuki, who harbors a dark secret: she loves drinking but is deeply embarrassed by her alcohol-induced hiccups. Naturally, they become drinking buddies, sparking a romance fueled by shared highballs and social panic.
The bright, inviting art style, courtesy of character designer Kou Yoshinari, perfectly captures the mild, existential wonder of discovering new liquors. Written by Yoko Yonaiyama, the series blends comedy, yuri romance, and a journey through humanity’s baffling ways of fermenting things. So, if you have ever found yourself staring at a bottle of absinthe during a thunderstorm and wondering if it would make a sensible nightcap (spoiler alert: Botan does exactly this), this is undoubtedly the show for you.
