Koshiro Onchi (1891-1955), an artist known in Japan as the father of abstract paintings and a pioneer of the contemporary woodblock print. Many recognize his 1915 “Lyric: The Clear Hours” as the first abstract painting in Japan, and his influence spanned many genres — from oils and watercolor to photography and book design.
